Whether you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s or older, the mention of LONG TERM CARE is either something that you know will never affect you or something that you are experiencing, to some degree, with your parents or other family members.

60 is no longer old; 70-year-olds have the possibility of a full vibrant life ahead of them; and yet we seem to forget that the advances in well being which can extend our lives, also bring with them the possibility of some chronic health issues. This is bring about the advent of more home based medical care, the growth of retirement and care communities and a very steep fall-off in nursing home usage as a percentage of the population.

Of course, we also note that those individuals who have not planned for a possible chronic health care problem, are those who continue to utilize formal nursing home care and who lose control when the unexpected happens. As with most financial issues in life, those who plan have the greatest flexibility if something unanticipated does occur.

In today’s fast paced mobile society, it is harder to count on help from our friends and families. In most cases, everybody is working just to meet day-to-day expenses. At the same time, government programs are being downsized, modified or restricted.
